Professional squash uses a glass court very similar to the type used by the US Open. They use a large jumbotron type screen that is on top of the court to enhance viewing. I also like the way pro squash uses the large screen for handling appeals.

When a player makes an appeal, the entire review process is performed by a remote official who has the ability to review the video, similar to the way college football instant replay reviews are handled.

There is no arguing with the referee because the final decision is made behind the scenes by another official.

The audience can also see the instant replay as well. This is a very good way to have the audience engaged with the appeal process. The process is very quick as you can see in the video.
(Click on image below to see video)

They also provide very nice player boxes with luxury chairs for the players to use during their match. This was very classy in my opinion.

I also thought the Squash Zone was great because it provided fans a way to be interactive with the event.

As we begin a New Year as well as the 2nd-half of the 2011–2012 International Racquetball Tour season, I thought I would take a look at the current stats for the currently active Top 30 ranked players for the tour. … Continue reading →

As we begin a New Year as well as the 2nd-half of the 2011–2012 International Racquetball Tour season, I thought I would take a look at the current stats for the currently active Top 30 ranked players for the tour. Unless you have been hiding under a rock or imprisoned in a Russian gulag, it is no secret that the IRT Tour has been absolutely dominated by #1 ranked Kane Waselenchuk. Kane’s dominance of the tour is indisputable, as evidenced by his current winning streak of 130 straight matches. This feat is unparalleled, not only in professional racquetball, but for most other sports as well.

Looking back even further than his current 130 match winning streak, Kane has dominated the IRT Tour since the September 2008 IRT World Championships in Denver Colorado. From a mall venue in The Mile High City and in an awesome Lucite court, Kane defeated Rocky Carson in a tough five-game match. Kane then followed up this victory with back-to-back weekend Tier One level tournament wins by defeating Jack Huczek and Alvaro Beltran respectively in Kansas City and Kentucky. On the following weekend, October 9–12, 2008, Kane elected to skip the 2008 Canadian Racquetball Classic. Jack Huczek met Rocky Carson in the finals of the Canadian Classic and pulled out a four-game victory. Two weeks later on October 26, 2008, Kane Waselenchuk met Rocky Carson in the finals of the 13th U.S. Open Racquetball Championships from Memphis Tennessee. Kane soundly defeated Rocky in three straight games 2, 4 & 4.

The next event on the 2008–2009 IRT tour was the November 12-16 Juarez Racquetball Championships from Chihuahua, Mexico. Kane also elected to skip this tournament and Rocky Carson and Jack Huczek again met in the finals with Rocky besting Jack in three straight games 9, 9 & 6.

This brings us to the infamous 2009 California Open from Canoga Park CA, January 9–11, 2009. Kane entered this tournament with two Grand Slam victories and two Tier One victories under his belt within the past three months. Kane met Mexican legend Alvaro Beltran in the semi-finals and Alvaro beat Kane in a tough four game battle 2, (9) 3 & 9. I like to refer to this match as the “Alpha and the Omega“. This was the beginning of Kane’s unprecedented record setting 130 match win streak, as well as the end of any real threat to his #1 crown and his reign at the top of the IRT Tour. After this bitter loss to Alvaro, Kane boldly proclaimed that it would be his last loss for the rest of the year.

In an earlier blog I wrote about The Kane Dominance, so I will move on from the Kane accolades and delve into the rest of the IRT tour.

Taking a look at the current IRT Tour rankings (as of 12.20 2011), aside from Kane Waselenchuk, there is not a currently active player who has won, at a minimum, a Tier One level event or let alone a Grand Slam tournament since Rocky Carson defeated Alvaro Beltran at the previously mentioned 2009 California Open. (Note: as of this writing I am not including recently retired IRT President Jason Mannino or recently retired future Hall of Fame member Jack Huczek as “currently active players”.)

Excluding Kane and prior to Rocky Carson’s January 11, 2009 California Open victory, the last currently active IRT player to win, at minimum, a Tier One level event was Racquetball Hall of Fame member and currently ranked #43 pro Cliff Swain at the 2005 San Diego Open where he defeated current ranked #8 pro Shane Vanderson in five games.

Some may argue that Cliff Swain is not a current “active” member of the IRT Tour. If you consider this argument it would then leave us with fellow Hall of Fame member and currently ranked #31 pro Ruben González as the last active IRT player to win at minimum a Tier One level event and that was on June 6, 1993 at the Transcoastal Tournament of Champions from Portland, Oregon. Ruben Gonzalez met Jack Newman in the Finals and managed to defeat Jack in an exciting five game match that yours truly personally witnessed.

Besides currently ranked #1 Kane Waselenchuk and #2 ranked Rocky Carson, one has to go very deep into the IRT Tour rankings – all the way down to #31 Ruben Gonzalez – to locate the highest ranked currently active IRT Pro to win at minimum a Tier One level pro stop on the tour.

What does this leave for the rest of the active tour? As is often said, “On any given Sunday…” someone just may step it up and win a Tier One stop besides Kane Waselenchuk. #2 Rocky Carson has a career record of 1 win and 39 losses versus Kane. Rocky’s sole win versus Kane was back in 2003 at the Pro Nationals in Tempe, AZ. Rocky beat Kane in the Quarters, 6, 7, & 8.

For anyone else on the tour to pull-off an upset would most likely mean beating Rocky Carson as well. Outside of Chris Crowther and perhaps Ben Croft, who have a combined total of just 3 wins and 45 losses against Rocky, I really do not see anyone in the Top 30 accomplishing an upset of Kane. I did not forget #14 ranked Alvaro Beltran, a crowd favorite and all-around genuine nice guy. Alvaro has been slowly recovering from a couple knee surgeries and the second-half of this season will be the biggest challenge of his illustrious racquetball career.

Many have scoffed at 59 year old Ruben Gonzalez’s announced goal to break into the Top 10 of the IRT Tour at age 60 just in time for the U.S. Open in October, 2012. Upon further review of this amazing goal it is actually starting to make some semblance of sanity. The upcoming 2nd-half of the 2011–2012 IRT Tour season will reportedly also see the return of another future Hall of Fame member – Sudsy Monchik. With the return of Sudsy and the “Don Quixote de la Mancha” efforts of Ruben González all I can say is “why not”?

Back on April Fools’ Day I posted a blog that was a spoof about the Marty Hogan Comeback Tour.

Hmmm… Makes you wonder.

Thanks to Todd Boss and Bossconsulting.com for the stats used in this blog.

2011 was kind of a mixed bag for me. I did my third corporate relocation in 7 years (San Francisco Bay Area, Raleigh, NC and now Philly).

I am thankful I have skill sets that employers find valuable. All this Hope & Change has had a huge negative impact on the economy and employment. Hopefully, 2012 will be the end of Hope & Change…

In 2011 I lost over 40 lbs and I have about 25 more to go. My goal is to be at the same playing weight as I was in 1983 when I won my last Open Doubles level racquetball tournament in San Diego, which was a genuine accomplishment back then because the competition in San Diego for racquetball was fierce to say the least! I remember players like Charlie Brumfield, Donny Thomas, Steve Strandemo, Bill Sell, Brian Hawkes, David and Andy Gross, Steve Trent, Ed Andrews and even Marty Hogan would play in our local tournaments and the prize money was often greater than current T1 events when you calculate for inflation 1980′s dollars to today.

I have not played much racquetball over past 2 years, choosing instead to focus on paddleball. With my move to Philly, I am getting back to playing racquetball again, but I am still getting a couple paddleball matches in weekly.

With the exception of outdoor WOR events, I have lost interest in shooting racquetball due to all the politics and petty squabbling. Funny thing about this is that I have never made so much as a single dime from shooting racquetball (I donate 100% of any paltry proceeds to the Wounded Warrior Project), yet my images are all over the internet and are even used by manufacturers and organizations. I shoot the events at my own expense for “the good of the game“, yet it seems some believe that means for the “good of their gain“.

I am feeling positive about 2012 though. I think we will not only see important meaningful changes for our great country, we will also see some big changes in our beloved sport of racquetball. I am not going to go into any 2012 predictions right now…perhaps later. I will make one prediction though: I think we will see a change of the guard at the top of a major racquetball organization.

I wish everyone here at 40By20.com a prosperous and healthy New Year!

See you on the 40By20…!

Mike Augustin

Current World Champion and #1 ranked Kane Waselenchuk’s impressive Finals victory today at the 2011 Novasors Kansas City Open racquetball tournament dictates the course of the brand new 2011-2012 IRT season, and further solidifies Kane’s complete and unquestionable dominance of the IRT Professional Racquetball Tour.

Kane’s opponent today in the Finals, #2 ranked Rocky Carson, performed at a level that was the best racquetball he has played in several years. With one exception, and that being Alvaro Beltran, Rocky walked through his opponents in his prior matches with the same ease that Kane walked through Rocky in their Finals match today. The big difference is that this is routine for Kane, while it is an accomplishment for Rocky Carson. Kane defeated Rocky in three straight games 11-3, 11-5 and 11-1.

The recent retirements of #4 ranked Jack Huczek and #7 ranked Mitch Williams will only solidify the absolute dominance of the IRT Tour by Kane. Some say the only person that can challenge Kane is Alvaro Beltran. Alvaro lost to Rocky Carson in the Quarters yesterday in a controversial and much heated match that went 5 tough and grueling games, 12-10, 9-11, 3-11, 11-9 & 11-9. Kane’s current winning streak of 117 straight games began after he last lost a racquetball match in 2009 to Alvaro Beltran in Los Angeles, California. Alvaro has since undergone two knee surgeries and has been plagued with chronic back problems. His overall fitness has also been questioned, although he looks to be in outstanding physical shape for the start of the new IRT season.

Current #3 ranked Ben Croft is always an exciting player to watch and is never to be taken lightly. Ben recently began his new career as an executive at Racquetball Warehouse in San Luis Obispo CA, and it could be a challenge to maintain the top level of play and fitness necessary to compete on the Tour while he is working in a new career full-time. Ben Croft lost to Rocky Carson in the Semi-finals and was not very impressive in that showing. Ben lost in three straight games, 11–1, 11–4 and 11–5. On a positive note, Ben did not receive any technical fouls the entire tournament.

With the upcoming US Open Grand Slam tournament at the Target Center in Minneapolis MN in three weeks, I predict Kane to continue his dominance by winning an unprecedented and record-setting 7th US Open Championship title.

The IRT today has a lot of up-and-coming future stars from all over the world who are positioning themselves for the coveted IRT top 10 rankings. As I said in an earlier blog on 40By20.com, it is safe to say that the next crop of IRT Top-10 candidates will most likely have the name of “Herrera” or “Alejandro”, or be from a Spanish-speaking country. Even Kane’s Pro Kennex teammate and teenage protégé, Daniel De La Rosa of Mexico, is highly considered as a potential candidate to make the IRT Top-10 this year.

With the exception of Andy Hawthorne and Chris Crowther, there really are no “old-school” players left in the IRT Top-10 rankings. Andy had a very successful opening tournament in Kansas by making the Semi-finals before losing to Kane Waselenchuk in three straight games 11-5, 11-3 and 11-0.

Barring injury or the unlikely event of mental lapses due to sheer boredom, I fully expect Kane to finish this new IRT season undefeated, including victories at the scheduled three coveted Grand Slam tournaments – the US Open in Minneapolis, the Bolivia Grand Slam, and the Ektelon Nationals in Fullerton, CA.

Some say the sport would benefit from others to step up and challenge Kane yet I for one am enjoying watching this era of dominance and I am looking forward to several seasons of success by the person I can now describe as the greatest racquetball player of all time–Kane Waselenchuk.

WPRO Boycotting 3 WallBall Championships Las Vegas

Sunday, 8/28/2011

40by20.com has learned that the governing body of women’s professional racquetball (WPRO) has elected to boycott the 2011 3 WallBall Championships in Las Vegas, Sep 21 – 25. The boycott affects the Top-16 WPRO professional players. (Click HERE for current WPRO rankings).

The WPRO boycott is reportedly the result of an unresolved dispute over certain demands and conditions that the WPRO attempted to negotiate on behalf of it’s contracted players. The WPRO reportedly demanded that 3 WallBall Championships organizers comp additional benefits and agree to certain guarantees for the WPRO.

40by20.com attempted to contact WPRO Commissioner Gigi Rock for official comment but as of publication we have not received a response.

WOR Executive Director and 3 WallBall Championships Co-organizer Hank Marcus did respond to our request for comment and told 40by20.com, “We welcome WPRO players and believe it is unfortunate that WPRO leadership has elected to boycott our event. We find this decision regrettable and hope WPRO leadership will reconsider their decision so that fans and players alike can enjoy watching the best female racquetball players in the world.”

Mike Coulter, Event Promoter for the 3 WallBall Championships was also interviewed by 40By20.com. Mr. Coulter told 40By20.com, “The WPRO was demanding certain monetary assurances and expense compensation, but they were not willing to give any guarantees or commitments in return to our event. After talks with the WPRO to negotiate their demands, which regrettably led to this point, the WPRO has chosen not to participate in the tournament. We welcome continued talks and we are willing to table negotiations of their demands in looking forward towards next year’s event.”

The 2011 3 WallBall Championships is the second in a row of a series of scheduled annual Las Vegas Grand Slam events that includes outdoor racquetball, handball and paddleball divisions. The tournament is open to the public and is held on the famous Las Vegas Strip at the Stratosphere Hotel and Casino. Last year the five-day tournament drew over 400 players from around the world and was viewed by thousands of fans in attendance and over live streaming worldwide internet broadcasts.

NOTE: AS WE PREDICTED ON FEB 12TH

The sport’s most decorated player moves on to dominate the telecommunications industry

Fullerton, Calif. – May 24, 2011 – Team HEAD/Penn’s Jack Huczek today officially announced his retirement from the sport of racquetball. He leaves a legacy stretching from his days on the junior circuit to his reign at the top of the professional rankings that may never be met again. Little did his mother know when placing Jack’s first racquet in his hand at their home club in Michigan more than 25 years ago that his career would amass 22 World Championships and 42 National Championships. Once becoming a full-time player on the International Racquetball Tour in 2000, Jack’s professional career would see him reach the finals in more than half of the events he entered.

While earning accolades on the court the past few seasons, Huczek was also earning grades in the classroom towards a Masters of Business Administration (MBA) degree from Oakland University. Jack’s degree will be put into play as he serves into a career in the telecommunications industry working as an Account Manager for Ericsson. Jack, his wife Christie and the couple’s daughter will continue to make the Dallas, Texas area their home. Huczek’s retirement is effective immediately and he will not be playing in the 2011 US National Championships this week in California.

“I’ve been presented with a great opportunity that will move my family into the next stage of our lives,” said Huczek. “I’ve been blessed to make a living playing the sport I love, but my focus now is on my new job. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the last five years on the IRT with my partnership with HEAD/Penn. I appreciate the friendships I have made within the HEAD/Penn family and hope they will continue.”

Huczek’s first break through performance on the national racquetball stage happened in 1991 when he won the 8 & Under Division at the then AARA U.S. Junior Olympics Championships. For the next 12 years Jack would move up through the age divisions, winning each championship at least twice. While dominating the National Junior Championships, no one at the World Junior Championships had much of a chance either. From the 10 & Under Division in 1993 through the 18 & Under Division in 2002, Huczek was untouchable. When the rest of the world’s young racquetball players were finally able to see Jack leave the junior ranks once turning 19, his collection of World and National Titles would reach a staggering number of 41! Add in three collegiate titles and Jack owned the most impressive resume the game had ever seen as he began his professional career.

Jack would start playing fulltime on the IRT in the fall of 2001. During his first few months, the new rookie would take some of the top players on tour — Carson, Maninno, Ellis, Monchik — to four or five games. On January 27, 2002 in Boston, Huczek would reach his first professional final. He would go up against another racquetball legend in Cliff Swain and on his home turf. On that winter day more than a decade ago, Jack won his first of 29 tournament victories on the IRT. For the next 10 years Jack would remain ranked among the Top Five players in the World. At the end of the 2006-2007 season, he reached the top of that list capturing the coveted No. 1 spot on the IRT Year End Rankings. Yet again, Jack Huczek was at the top of the racquetball world.

“Although we are sad to be losing Jack from the full time ranks of the IRT and the HEAD/Penn staff we are thrilled for him and his family as he embarks on this exciting new chapter in his life. For the past five years we have enjoyed our partnership with Jack and witnessed his steady climb to the top of the sport,” said Doug Ganim, HEAD/Penn National Indoor Promotions Manager. “I have personally known Jack since he was 12 years old and have never met a harder working and determined individual. I have no doubt that he will conquer the corporate world just as he has done in racquetball.”

Jack Huczek’s Racquetball Career Accomplishments:

No. 1 ranked player in the world after 2006-2007 season

The WPRO’s ranking system is based on a 12 month cycle. That means that the season ending ranking points include the points earned for all tournaments on the schedule for the previous 12 months. Let’s use this season as an example and focus on the #1 and #2 spots. Heading into the WPRO Ektelon World Championships in New Orleans (May 12-15, 2011), Rhonda Rajsich had recently overtaken Paola Longoria in points for the #1 ranking by defeating her in the In Shape WPRO Championships in Stockton (April 29-May 1, 2011). That win gave Rhonda a point total of 1544.30 and Paola a point total of 1530.53. The assumption by some was that if Paola won the World Championships this year, she would take over the #1 ranking because the margin between her and Rhonda was less than 14 points. However, based on the 12 month cycle if the same event occurs around the same time every year, the points earned for that event are not dropped or replaced until after that event is completed the following season.

Last year, Paola earned 228.75 points at the World Championships in New Orleans with her second place finish. This year she earned 300 points — 160 x 1.875 points. Note 1.875 is our Grand Slam multiplier. The points from last year were replaced by the points earned this year so Paola had a net gain of 71.25 points for that event to close out the 2010-2011 season. Rhonda Rajsich earned 127.50 points for her semifinal finish at the World Championships last year. This year, she earned 210 points — 112 x 1.875 — for her second place finish. This gave her a net gain of 82.50 points. With Rhonda’s 13.77 points going into the 2011 World Championships and 11.25 points more than Paola’s net gain from last year appearance, Rhonda has earned more total points in 14 tournaments. Therefore, Rhonda is the #1 ranked player for the 2010-2011 season. Note: Paola did not compete in the Tier 1 event in Olympia, Washington.

The 12 month cycle is currently being used by pro tours across a variety of sports around the world and has been used by the WPRO for many years. Moving forward, in an effort to eliminate any confusion, the WPRO will also publish a “year-to-date” compilation of ranking points. This will allow the players and others to see the current standings as we go.
